12月を迎え、光と希望に満ち、心が高まる待降節の季節となりました。この時期になると、ある神父から伺った小さな、しかし心に残る出来事を思い出します。クリスマスの準備をしていたご家庭を訪ねた際、子どもたちは嬉しそうにツリーの飾りつけをしていましたが、そのうちに「どの飾りをどこにつけるか」で言い合いになってしまいました。それを見ていたおばあさんが静かにこう言われました。

「それぞれの飾りが自分の場所を見つけたとき、ツリーは一番美しくなるんだよ。」

その言葉を聞いた子どもたちはすっと静かになり、クリスマスとは互いに競うことではなく、共に美しさをつくりあげることであると気づいたそうです。この優しい言葉は、私たち教会共同体にも深い示唆を与えてくれます。

このクリスマスの思いをさらに分かち合う前に、この二ヶ月間の皆さまの寛大さと献身に、まず心からの感謝を申し上げたいと思います。私たちは共に、一粒会の集まり、亡くなった方々のための一ヶ月間の祈り、磐田教会バザー、日曜学校の成長、フィリピン台風被災者への温かいご支援、そして梅村司教様のご訪問をいただいた堅信式など、多くの恵み深い出来事を歩んでまいりました。皆さまの奉仕と労苦、そして真心は、磐田・掛川両教会の共同体を豊かに支え、力づけてくださいました。このすべてに、心より感謝申し上げます。

待降節は、救い主イエスの誕生に向けて心を整える大切な季節です。クリスマスは単なる祝日ではなく、家族と共同体を思い起こす特別な時であり、神がひとつの家庭の温かさの中において、私たちと共に歩むために人となられたことを思い起こさせてくれます。梅村司教様は磐田教会のご訪問の際、「私たちが神の愛を本当に理解できるのは、神がイエスにおいて人間となり、私たちの喜びや苦しみ、痛みや涙を共にしてくださったからです」と美しく語ってくださいました。神がこのように深い優しさで私たちに近づいてくださるからこそ、私たちも互いに近づき、歩み寄ることが求められています。教皇フランシスコも、『アモリス・レティティア』（愛のよろこび）の中で次のように述べています。

「家庭は神のかたちです―三位一体の一致を映し出す交わりなのです。」（愛のよろこび71）

家庭―そしてすべてのキリスト者の共同体―は神のかたちを映す存在であるため、悪しき力はその調和を壊そうと常に働きかけます。疑い、対立、傷つけ合い、混乱は、愛に根ざした一致の美しさを曇らせてしまいます。そのため私たちはつねに注意深くある必要があります。分裂や混乱、互いを傷つける行いは、私たちの中に宿る神のかたちを弱めてしまうからです。

しかし、クリスマスは私たちをさらに大きな道へと招いています。それは、イエスのように生きること―愛に導かれ、和解の手を差し伸べ、違いを受け入れ、家族や教会の中で真摯に一致に向かって働くことです。

聖家族であるマリアとヨセフは、恐れや誤解、困難や不安に満ちた日々を経験しました。おそらく私たち以上に多くの重荷を背負っていたことでしょう。それでも二人は互いを見放さず、分裂ではなく一致を、疑いではなく信頼を、恐れではなく信仰を選び続けました。その歩みの先に、世界最大の恵み―救い主の誕生―がもたらされたのです。同じように私たちも、互いを尊び、違いを受け入れ、忍耐をもって一致に向かって進むとき、神は私たちのただ中におられます。

インマヌエル―神は私たちと共におられる―は、家庭の中でも教会の中でも、今も現実となるのです。

どうか誤解や困難、違いがあっても、ひとつの家族として生きようとする私たちの努力を通して、キリストが私たちのうちにお住まいになりますように。

梅村司教様が教えてくださったように、私たちが互いにイエスのように愛を示し、言葉と行いを通してその愛を分かち合う者となれますように。

そして磐田・掛川の共同体が、聖家族の愛と忍耐と一致を映し出す場となりますように。

このクリスマスが、皆さまのご家庭に平和と喜び、そして希望を豊かにもたらしますように。

待降節の祝福と、喜びに満ちたクリスマスをお迎えください。

As we enter the month of December—a season filled with light, meaning, and joyful expectation—I am reminded of a simple yet touching story shared by a priest friend. He once visited a family preparing their home for Christmas. The children were happily decorating the tree, but their excitement soon turned into disagreement as they argued over where each ornament should be placed. Their grandmother, quietly watching, gently said, “Children, the tree looks most beautiful when each ornament finds its place.” In that moment, the children understood that Christmas is not about competing for space, but about creating something beautiful together. This gentle wisdom speaks deeply to us as a parish family.

Before reflecting further on this Christmas season, I would like to express my sincere gratitude for your generosity and dedication over the past two months. Together, we have journeyed through many meaningful moments—the Ichiryuu Kai assembly, the month-long prayer for our beloved departed, the Iwata Church Bazaar, the continued growth of our Sunday School, your generous support for those affected by the typhoons in the Philippines, and the confirmation ceremony, crowned by the blessed visit of Bishop Umemura to our Iwata Church. Your commitment, service, and sacrifices have strengthened our communities in Iwata and Kakegawa in beautiful and lasting ways, and for all your efforts, I thank you from the heart.

As Advent leads us to prepare our hearts for the birth of Jesus, we remember that Christmas is not only a feast—it is a celebration of family and community, a reminder that God chose to be close to us by becoming one of us. During his visit to Iwata, Bishop Umemura reminded us that we can truly understand the love of God because He became like us in Jesus, sharing our joys, our struggles, our pains, and even our tears. Because God has drawn near to us with such tenderness, we are also called to draw near to one another. This truth is beautifully expressed by Pope Francis in Amoris Laetitia: “The family is the image of God… a communion of persons that reflects the unity of the Trinity” (AL 71). Since the family—and every Christian community—is meant to reflect this divine image, the devil constantly seeks to disturb its harmony. He sows division, suspicion, hurt, and confusion because he cannot bear the beauty of unity rooted in love. For this reason, we must be vigilant. When we create division, spread confusion, or harm one another, we weaken the image of God in our midst. Yet Christmas calls us to something far greater: to be like Jesus—to let His love guide our choices, to reach out in reconciliation, to welcome those who differ from us, and to work sincerely for unity within our families and parish community.

The Holy Family of Mary and Joseph offers us a powerful model of persevering love. They faced fear, misunderstanding, hardship, and uncertainty—perhaps even more than many families today—yet they remained together. They chose unity over division, trust over doubt, and faith over fear. Because they walked together in love, the world received its greatest miracle: the birth of the Savior. In the same way, when we value one another, embrace our differences, and work patiently for unity, God becomes present among us. Emmanuel—God with us—becomes real in our homes and in our parish.

May our efforts to live as one family—despite misunderstandings, difficulties, and differences—make Christ present in our hearts and communities. May we follow Bishop Umemura’s reminder by becoming like Jesus to one another, sharing God’s love through our words, our actions, and our presence. And may our communities of Iwata and Kakegawa reflect the love, patience, and unity of the Holy Family. May this Christmas fill your homes with peace, joy, and hope.
